The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement and bottle. These data were collected by Triona McGrath of Marine Institute and National University of Ireland, Galway, Evin McGovern and Evin McGovern of Marine Institute of Ireland (MI), and Caroline Kivimäe, Rachel R. Cave, Rachel R. Cave, and Triona McGrath of National University of Ireland - Galway as part of the COASTAL_Rockall_Trough_2009_2010 and COASTAL_Rockall_Trough_2011_2012 dataset. CDIAC assigned the following cruise ID(s) to this dataset: CE11001, CE12001 and COASTAL_Rockall_Trough. The Global Coastal Carbon Data Project data includes the bottle (discrete) and surface (underway) carbon-related measurements from coastal research cruises, the data from time series cruises and coastal moorings. The coastal regions data are very important for the understanding of carbon cycle on the continental margins. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises. This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis. The resulting CO2 is forced out of the sample by a continuous flow of pure nitrogen through the sample and the extracted CO2 is passed into a titration cell in the coulometer. The CO2 is titrated coulometrically with a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) based absorbent containing ethanolamine. The CO2 reacts quantitatively with the ethanolamine to produce hydroxyethylcarbanic acid. The pH of the titration is monitored by measuring the transmittance of the thymolphthalein indicator which shows when the titration is finished. The thymol blue indicator fades to the original colour due to generation of hydroxide ions at the cathode to maintain the transmittance of the solution at a constant value. The change in colour is monitored by the photodetector as a percentage of transmittance (%T). The amount of CO2 extracted from the sample is determined by the time integrated current of the hydroxide ions generated.
