The data and model outputs focus on examining fish biological data around Guam and American Samoa, with outputs such as fish biomass, fish size, and fish spawning potential ratio (SPR). The priority fish species that were examined for Guam include: Chlorurus microrhinos, Chlorurus spilurus, and Naso lituratus. Whereas, the priority fish species that were examined for American Samoa include: Acanthurus lineatus, Naso lituratus, and Scarus rubroviolaceus. Data collection range varies 2000-20250929. The goal of the pilot project, “Develop a Spatial Management Evaluation Tool for American Samoa and Guam”, branded Fish-BANC (Fish-Based Area Necessary Credit) by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and local stakeholders in Guam, was to develop a fisheries-specific spatial management evaluation tool for the U.S. territories of Guam and American Samoa, specifically to evaluate the contribution of marine protected areas (MPAs) to key fisheries management metrics. Working with local coral reef fisheries managers in Guam and American Samoa, @Orchard, LLC selected, in each jurisdiction, three priority coral reef fish species and two marine managed areas (MMAs), from among all outer reef MPAs, and assessed spatial patterns in population structure and reproductive potential. @Orchard collated and analyzed fisheries-independent and fisheries-dependent data and developed a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework to map existing spatial management features and overlay calculated fisheries management metrics, including spawning potential ratio (SPR). The results are informing the Jurisdictional Coral Reef Fisheries Management Plans (JCR-FMPs) currently under development in both Guam and American Samoa, by providing spatially explicit data on biological targets to assess current MPA designs and broader benefits, such as spillover effects. The surveys were conducted using diver-operated stereo video across 17 fixed sites around Guam using 24-minute (2011/12) or 30-minute (2021) timed swims at two depths (6-10 m and 18-20 m) with the distance measured by GPS using a surface buoy, covering an average area of 1.1 hectares per site. Individual fish within 8 m in front and 2.5 m on either side of the camera trajectory were identified to species level, annotated by color phase (for parrotfishes and humphead wrasse, as most of these species have initial and terminal phases broadly associated with sex), and measured to the nearest mm fork length. The 17 sites span multiple MPAs as well as a wide range of environmental and anthropogenic factors (e.g., exposure, benthic substrate, fishing pressure, adjacent habitats) that are incorporated in the data set. For both datasets, underwater visual census of fish were conducted using the Stationary Point Count (SPC) method at ~20-m intervals along the benthic survey transect lines. We simulated post-recruitment size structures using a log-normal distribution following Heather et al. (2025), a common approximation for fish body lengths that ensures all values are positive and reflects the right-skewed nature of natural size distributions. For each mean size value, a log-normal distribution was parameterized using standard formulas relating the arithmetic mean and coefficient of variation (CV) to the distribution’s log-scale parameters. Specifically, for a given mean size L and CV, we first calculated the standard deviation as σ=L×CV, then used a transformation to obtain the log-normal parameters. Using these parameters, we generated synthetic size distributions by drawing 1,000 random samples per mean size from the log-normal distribution. This approach allowed us to reconstruct representative population size structures for a range of mean lengths without requiring full raw size-frequency data.
