<gmd:abstract>
<gco:CharacterString>From March 10 - 28, 2021 (Key West, FL to San Juan, Puerto Rico), NOAA Ocean Exploration conducted mapping operations south of Puerto Rico in U.S. waters, aiding in closing bathymetric gaps within this region. EX-22-02 collected 18,850 square kilometers of bathymetry and associated water column data, 18,033 square kilometers of which were within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone and Territorial Sea deeper than 200 m. During mapping operations, NOAA Ocean Exploration simultaneously collected EM 304 multibeam sonar bathymetry observations and Simrad EK60/EK80 split-beam fisheries sonar observations of biologic material in the water column, as well as Knudsen 3260 sub-bottom profiler observations of sub-seafloor geologic structure and sediment. A single CTD cast during the expedition validated deep deployment capabilities in preparation for planned CTD operations on EX-22-03. The exploratory mapping operations conducted during this cruise will provide initial characterization of the region, as well as data to support further exploration.</gco:CharacterString>
</gmd:abstract>
<gmd:purpose>
<gco:CharacterString>EX-22-02 operations will involve a transit eastward followed by focused ocean mapping operations that will occur in U.S. waters south of Puerto Rico, mostly in deep water (>200 m). The expedition will include 24-hour-a-day exploratory mapping operations to fill mapping gaps.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>A CTD device's primary function is to detect how the conductivity and temperature of the water column changes relative to depth. Conductivity is a measure of how well a solution conducts electricity and it is directly related to salinity. By measuring the conductivity of seawater, the salinity can be derived from the temperature and pressure of the same water. The depth is then derived from the pressure measurement by calculating the density of water from the temperature and the salinity.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>The EM 304 consists of a new state-of-the-art electronics and separate transmit and receive transducers in a Mills Cross configuration. It utilizes the same field-proven
transducers as the EM 302, making it easy to upgrade. Care has been taken to design a highly, modular and flexible solution with compact electronics for easier and faster installation. Due to a flexible transducer design, the system
can be tailored to almost any required size. The largest standard size, 0.5 x 0.5 degrees, gives the ultimate system performance in terms of resolution and range, while a smaller 4 x 4 degrees solution can be installed on any vessel
of opportunity</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>The Simrad EK60 Scientific Sounder system is a new generation fishery researchtool, based on experience from the EK500. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>The Simrad EK80 is the most modern "high end" split beam scientific echo sounder in the fishery scientific market. Based on more than 60 years of research and development in close collaboration with leading marine scientists this wide band echo sounder system has succeeded the famous EK60, which became an international standard for fish stock assessment. The Simrad EK80 can operate a large number of frequencies simultaneously ranging from 10 to 500 kHz. A wide selection of high quality accurate transducers is available.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>The Wind Monitor MA is an accurate and reliable wind sensor specifically designed for the rigors of the marine environment.The wind speed sensor is a four blade helicoid propeller. Unique transducer produces a pulse signal without electrical contacts or slip rings. The wind direction sensor is a durable molded vane. Vane angle is sensed by a precision potentiometer housed in a sealed chamber. All materials are carefully selected for corrosion resistance and maximum durability in the harsh marine environment. Ceramic bearings are used throughout. The instrument mounts on standard 1 inch pipe. Separate signal conditioning circuits are available to provide voltage or current signals when needed. Each is supplied in a weatherproof junction box with mounting hardware.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>The SBE 45 is an externally-powered, high-accuracy instrument, designed for shipboard determination of sea surface (pumped-water) conductivity and temperature. Salinity and sound velocity can also be computed. Communication with the SBE 45 is over an internal, 3-wire, RS-232C link, providing real-time data transmission. An optional Interface Box provides power, a NMEA 0183 port for appending navigation information from a NMEA navigation device to the data stream, and an RS-232 port for appending SBE 38 remote temperature sensor output.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>The RESON SVP 70 sound velocity probe is developed for fixed-mount installation on surface ships, outboard rigs, submarines, AUVs, ROVs and other self-propelled platforms. The SVP 70 uses the latest electronic technology combined with an innovative mechanical design to yield a compact, robust, yet very flexible product. The SVP 70 uses a direct path echosounding technique that instantly compensates for temperature and pressure with internal sensors. The SVP 70 comes in a water resistant case including brackets for mounting, a 3m accessory cable, bolts, and a user manual with system description. Additional adaptor kits and fairing accessories are available.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>For over twenty years, Teledyne RD Instruments has been the preeminent supplier of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiling (ADCP) instrumentation for open ocean applications. Teledyne RDI's vessel-mounted Ocean Surveyor family of ADCPs continues to raise the bar, collecting detailed maps of the distribution of water currents and suspended materials through the water column and along the ship's path - at depths and resolutions previously considered unattainable. In real time, the ADCP is also used to aid in situ decision-making, to adapt field operations, and to understand current regime characteristics.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>The WetLabs ECO FLNTU is a dual-wavelength, single-angle sensor for simultaneously determining both chlorophyll fluorescence and turbidity.
It detects light scattered by particles suspended in water, generating an output voltage proportional to turbidity or suspended solids.
Scaling factors are used to convert the voltage readings to values representing chlorophyll concentration and turbidity expressed in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTUs).</gco:CharacterString>
