Previous work along the U.S. Atlantic coast shows that the structure and composition of older geologic strata located seaward of the coast heavily influences the coastal behavior of areas with limited sediment supply, such as the Grand Strand. By defining this geologic framework and identifying the transport pathways and sinks of sediment, geoscientists are developing conceptual models of the present-day physical processes shaping the South Carolina coast. The primary objectives of this research effort are: 1) to provide a regional synthesis of the shallow geologic framework underlying the coastal upland, shoreface and inner continental shelf, and define its role in coastal evolution and modern beach behavior; 2) to identify and model the physical processes affecting coastal ocean circulation and sediment transport, and to define their role in shaping the modern shoreline; and 3) to identify sediment sources and transport pathways; leading to construction of a regional sediment budget.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "description": "The metadata original format", "downloadURL": "https://data.usgs.gov/datacatalog/metadata/USGS.d5b887be-0250-4068-8681-a573d3716a98.xml", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "text/xml", "title": "Original Metadata"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2005/1346/arcgis/tracklines/sonar_trk.zip", "description": "Landing page for access to the data", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "application/http", "title": "Digital Data"}], "identifier": "http://datainventory.doi.gov/id/dataset/USGS_d5b887be-0250-4068-8681-a573d3716a98", "keyword": ["Pawleys Island", "United States", "South Carolina", "Grand Strand", "Woods Hole Science Center", "location", "geospatial datasets", "Waites Island", "WHSC field activity serial number 02014", "navigational data", "WHSC field activity serial number 02011", "tracks", "WHSC", "Southeast United States", "WHSC field activity serial number 00014", "WHSC field activity serial number 99044", "sidescan", "Coastal and Marine Geology Program", "Garden City", "WHSC field activity serial number 01008", "WHSC field activity serial number 03009", "U.S. Geological Survey", "USGS", "CMGP", "Myrtle Beach", "sidescan-sonar", "marine geophysics", "ESRI polyline shapefile", "Surfside", "oceans", "Atlantic Ocean", "track lines", "North Myrtle Beach", "USGS:d5b887be-0250-4068-8681-a573d3716a98", "transportation"], "modified": "2024-03-18T00:00:00Z", "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "U.S. Geological Survey"}, "spatial": "-79.175150, 33.143860, -78.516267, 33.845510", "theme": ["geospatial"], "title": "Sidescan-Sonar navigation trackline data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey offshore of the Grand Strand, South Carolina (SONAR_TRK, Polyline)"}
