<descript>
This data contains the location of coal resources within the State of Alaska and created in cooperation with the Alaska Coal Association. Total hypothetical coal resources in Alaska exceed 5.5 trillion short tons, equal to about half the estimated coal resources of the United States. Major coal deposits occur in the Northern Alaska, Nenana, and Cook Inlet-Susitna provinces.
<purpose>The data provides consultants, planners, and resource managers with information on the location of coal resources. Coal resources in numerous smaller coal fields around the state are less well defined, but some may constitute a viable local energy resource. Alaska's coal resources are sufficient for domestic use and export for at least the next century and probably for two or three centuries based on current consumption rates.</purpose>

<datacred>In addition to help and encouragement from former State Geologist Ross G. Schaff and the staff of the Division of Mining and Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DMGGS), the map was reviewed and improved by R.B. Sanders (consulting geologist, Anchorage); G.D. Stricker (U.S. Geological Survey, Denver); P.D. Rao (University of Alaska Mineral Industry Research Laboratory, Fairbanks); S.E. Rawlinson and G.R. Eakins (DMGGS); D.M. Triplehorn (University of Alaska Department of Geology-Geophysics, Fairbanks); John F.M. Sims (Usibelli Coal Mine; Alaska Coal Association); Kurt Humphrey (Cook Inlet Region, Inc.); and Pio Park (Chugach Alaska Native Corporation). J.E. Callahan contributed information on the Northern Alaska province; J.V. Tucker (Diamond Alaska Coal Company), C.E. McFarland, and B.J.G. Patsch (Placer U.S. Inc.) reviewed the discussion of the Cook Inlet - Susitna province; and D.E. Germer (Rocky Mountain Energy) extensively revised the section on the Matanuska field. Clyde Wahrhaftig (U.S. Geological Survey) contributed information for the section on the Nenana province; C.P. Boddy, M.D. Usibelli, and S.C. Wilbur (Usibelli Coal Mine) also contributed to that discussion. J.C. Barker (U.S. Bureau of Mines) assisted with the Upper Yukon province. V.L. Reger and C.L. Daniels (DMGGS) edited the report.
