          <gmi:description>
            <gco:CharacterString>Nancy Foster, one of the most operationally diverse platforms in the NOAA fleet, was originally built as a Navy yard torpedo test (YTT) craft. In 2001, the Navy transferred the vessel to NOAA who outfitted the ship to conduct coastal research along the U.S. Atlantic/Gulf coasts, and the Caribbean. Nancy Foster is named for Dr. Nancy Foster, in tribute to her outstanding contributions in advancing NOAA's mission through her leadership within the National Marine Fisheries Service and National Ocean Service from 1986 until 2000. Nancy Foster supports applied research for NOAA's National Ocean Service and Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. Operations include the characterization of habitats in our nation's National Marine Sanctuaries and coastal waters, water quality studies, maritime heritage surveys, and coral reef assessments. The vessel employs state of the art navigation and propulsion systems resulting in high quality and efficient data collection with cutting edge technology including high resolution multibeam sonars, split beam sonars, and an array of water quality sensors and CTDs. Additional capabilities include water, sediment, and core sampling, sub-bottom profiling, diving with air and NITROX, ROV and AUV operations, small boat operations and servicing oceanographic/atmospheric surface and subsurface buoys..</gco:CharacterString>

                <gco:CharacterString>The EM1002 multibeam echosounder is designed for high-resolution seabed mapping. It operates effectively at a variety of depths, from shallow coastal waters to 1000 meters. The system is easy to install, even on smaller vessels. The EM1002 has an accuracy which surpasses both present IHO standards and proposed revisions. The EM1002 is now out of production and Kongsberg has stopped general maintenance of this instrument. The EM 1002 has been replaced by the EM710.</gco:CharacterString>

                <gco:CharacterString>The Simrad EK60 Scientific Sounder system is a new generation fishery researchtool, based on experience from the EK500. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system.</gco:CharacterString>

                <gco:CharacterString>The FE-700 is a result of over 50 years of Furuno's vast range of experience and advanced microelectronics technology fields in developing echo sounders, sonars, and underwater application equipment and systems. This echo sounder is a breakthrough over the conventional paper eating sounders; there are no consumable items. The purpose of the echo sounder is to provide safe navigation by detecting the clearance below the ship (particularly in shallow waters) as required on the SOLAS Convention ships by the new IMO standards.</gco:CharacterString>

                <gco:CharacterString>The Wind Monitor MA is an accurate and reliable wind sensor specifically designed for the rigors of the marine environment.The wind speed sensor is a four blade helicoid propeller. Unique transducer produces a pulse signal without electrical contacts or slip rings. The wind direction sensor is a durable molded vane. Vane angle is sensed by a precision potentiometer housed in a sealed chamber. All materials are carefully selected for corrosion resistance and maximum durability in the harsh marine environment. Ceramic bearings are used throughout. The instrument mounts on standard 1 inch pipe. Separate signal conditioning circuits are available to provide voltage or current signals when needed. Each is supplied in a weatherproof junction box with mounting hardware.</gco:CharacterString>

                <gco:CharacterString>The SBE 21 accurately determines sea surface temperature and conductivity from underway vessels. Data is simultaneously stored in memory and transmitted to a computer serial port, allowing independent data logging and real-time data acquisition. Typically mounted near the ship's seawater intake, the SBE 21 is connected to an AC-powered interface box positioned near the computer. The interface box provides power and an isolated data interface, and contains a NMEA 0183 port for appending navigation information to the data stream.</gco:CharacterString>

                <gco:CharacterString>For over twenty years, Teledyne RD Instruments has been the preeminent supplier of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiling (ADCP) instrumentation for open ocean applications. Teledyne RDI's vessel-mounted Ocean Surveyor family of ADCPs continues to raise the bar, collecting detailed maps of the distribution of water currents and suspended materials through the water column and along the ship's path - at depths and resolutions previously considered unattainable. In real time, the ADCP is also used to aid in situ decision-making, to adapt field operations, and to understand current regime characteristics.</gco:CharacterString>

              <gmi:description>
                <gco:CharacterString>The Seapoint Chlorophyll Fluorometer (SCF) is a high-performance, low power instrument for in situ measurements of chlorophyll. Its small size, very low power consumption, high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, 6000 meter depth capability, and open or pump-through sample volume options provide the power and flexibility to measure chlorophyll in a wide variety of conditions. The SCF uses modulated blue LED lamps and a blue excitation filter to excite chlorophyll. The fluorescent light emitted by the chlorophyll passes through a red emission filter and is detected by a silicon photodiode. The low level signal is then processed using synchronous demodulation circuitry which generates an output voltage proportional to chlorophyll concentration. The SCF may be operated with or without a pump. The sensing volume may be left open to the surrounding water, or, with the use of the supplied cap, can have water pumped through it. Two control lines allow the user to set the range to one of four options. These lines may be hardwired or microprocessor controlled to provide a suitable range and resolution for a given application. The sensor is easily interfaced with data acquisition packages; a 5 ft. pigtail is supplied.</gco:CharacterString>

                <gco:CharacterString>The Seapoint Turbidity Meter detects light scattered by particles suspended in water, generating an output voltage proportional to turbidity or suspended solids. The low power requirements make it ideal for applications where battery drain is a concern. Range is chosen by two digital lines which can be hard wired or microprocessor controlled, thereby choosing the appropriate range and resolution for measurement of extremely clean to very turbid waters. The offset voltage is within 1 mV of zero and requires no adjustment across gains. The unique optical design confines the sensing volume to within 5 cm of the sensor allowing near-bottom measurements and minimizing errant reflections in restricted spaces. The sensor is easily interfaced with data acquisition packages; a 5 ft pigtail is supplied.</gco:CharacterString>
