The valley is a sink and potential conduit for the movement of sediments and associated contaminants across the shelf. A winter experiment (1999-2000) investigated the role of winter storms in transporting sediments in the valley. A spring experiment (2006) explored transport during the period of spring runoff from the Hudson River. The spring experiment was carried out in cooperation with the Lagrangian Transport and Tracer Experiment (LATTE).
