Measurements included, but were not limited to, diameter at breast height, estimated canopy height, diameter and number of prop roots, and leaf area. Additional data files are point clouds of representative stands of coastal vegetation communities generated by a terrestrial laser scanner. Scans were collected between 2017-11-27 and 2017-12-02. Southwest Florida contains the largest area of tidally influenced public lands in the Gulf of Mexico and the fastest growing urban landscape in Florida. Both the human and natural components of the ecosystem are under increasing risk due to the threats of a growing human population, sea level rise, and tropical cyclones. The project “A Web-based Interactive Decision-Support Tool for Adaptation of Coastal Urban and Natural Ecosystems (ACUNE) in Southwest Florida” will create inundation, salinity distribution, habitat distribution maps, beach and barrier islands vulnerability, and economic impacts maps for various climate and sea level rise scenarios and will integrate the maps into a web-based interactive decision-support tool that enables users to identify areas of high vulnerability. This dataset provides vegetation distribution and structural geometry measurements used to parameterize a storm surge model for Collier County. Working with local governments, a decision-support tool will be developed to aid resource managers with preservation and restoration of mangrove, marsh, and beach habitats and mitigation of future salt water intrusion in estuaries and their associated habitats. This will be accomplished in two steps. First, a suite of coupled state-of-the-art models will be used to create inundation, salinity distribution, habitat distribution, beach and barrier islands vulnerability, and economic impact maps for current and future climate and for various sea level rise scenarios specific to the region. The researchers will then integrate the maps into an ACUNE web-based interactive decision-support tool that enables users to identify areas of high vulnerability in many layers of interest. To ensure the tools use, end-users will be consulted during its development and trained on how to use the tool. The tool will also allow local governments (Collier County, Cities of Naples and Marco Island) to make strategic decisions on coastal planning, zoning, land acquisition, and restoration for coastal resiliency. For communities including mangroves or other woody plants we created several (5-10) circular plots with radii determined ad hoc based on size of plants and distance between individuals, placed in locations that best captured the community. Within circular plots we counted all woody plants, differentiating between mature (>1m tall) or saplings (</= 1m). We then measured DBH and height, counted any prop roots or pneumatophores, measured height and diameter of 5 representative prop roots or pneumatophores, and estimated their percent cover within each plot. For broadleaf woody plants, we estimated crown diameter and counted the number of branches per sapling, leaves per branch, and measured leaf area of 5 representative leaves. For herbaceous graminoid sampling (either as the only plants in a community or represented in the understory of woodland communities) we used 50x50cm quadrats in which we estimated percent cover of each herbaceous species and measured diameter and stem height of 5 representative stems.
