This online research tool provides the locations and outlines of most DGGS and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) geologic maps of Alaska in a single, interactive web application. It allows searches of the map database by geographic area of interest, keywords, publishing agency, dates, and other criteria. The search results link DGGS's comprehensive, multi-agency publications database, where users can view and download publications for free. Map Index provides access to traditional geologic maps and sample location, geologic hazards, and geologic resources maps. In addition, DGGS plans to add outlines and data to the application for new and remaining geologic maps published by DGGS, USGS, U.S. Bureau of Mines, and U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Reports without maps can be accessed through DGGS's comprehensive publications database, <http://dggs.alaska.gov/pubs/advanced-search>.
<purpose>The Map Index interactive web mapping application facilitates the discovery of geologic maps needed to perform research, make informed resource- and land-management decisions, and better understand the geology across Alaska.</purpose><supplinf>DGGS appreciates the collaborative support from the U.S. Geological Survey's National Geologic Map Database project (David Soller, USGS Project Chief), which provided data for thousands of U.S. Geological Survey geology-related maps in Alaska.</supplinf></descript><timeperd><timeinfo><rngdates><begdate>2000</begdate><enddate>2021</enddate></rngdates></timeinfo><current>in development</current></timeperd><status><progress>in work</progress><update>irregular</update></status><spdom><bounding><westbc>140</westbc><eastbc>-65</eastbc><northbc>80</northbc><southbc>18</southbc></bounding></spdom><keywords><theme><themekt>ISO 19115 Topic Category</themekt><themekey>geoscientificInformation</themekey></theme><theme><themekt>None</themekt><themekey>Alaska Statewide Maps</themekey><themekey>Geologic Map</themekey><themekey>Analytical Results</themekey><themekey>Energy Resources</themekey><themekey>Engineering Geology</themekey><themekey>Environmental</themekey><themekey>Geochemical Data</themekey><themekey>Geologic Hazards</themekey><themekey>Geologic Materials</themekey><themekey>Geology</themekey><themekey>Mineral Resources</themekey></theme><place><placekt>None</placekt><placekey>Alaska, State of</placekey><placekey>Alaska Statewide Quadrangle</placekey><placekey>Russia</placekey><placekey>Canada</placekey></place></keywords><accconst>This report, map, and/or dataset is available directly from the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (see contact information below).</accconst><useconst>Any hard copies or published datasets utilizing these datasets shall clearly indicate their source. The redesigned 2021 web map application was funded by the USGS National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program under award number G20AP00103 and the State of Alaska General Fund and implemented by Michael Hendricks (GIS analyst), Susan Seitz (database manager/programmer), Jennifer Athey (project manager, geologist), and Simone Montayne (geologist). The following DGGS employees helped create the 2013 Map Index application: Jennifer Athey (project manager, geologist), Susan Seitz (database manager/programmer), Anonymous (programmer), Simone Montayne (geologist), and Ken Woods (systems administrator). Application design ideas and an application prototype were provided by Will Fisher, Geographic Information Network of Alaska (programmer). DGGS staff responsible for original data compilation: Laurel Burns (project manager, geophysicist), Robin Smith (geologist), Shelley Hicks (geologist), and Heather Erickson (geologist). Data from the 2000-2005 compilation was imported into DGGS's enterprise database and programmatically quality checked. Map Index data are made available to the application through a feature service from a concatenated table in the PostgreSQL database.
