Ocean physical measurements are made on these two sections annually funded by NERC as National Capability, currently through the ORCHESTRA (Ocean Regulation of Climate by Heat and Carbon Sequestration and Transports) programme, in order to monitor and understand variability of Antarctic Circumpolar Current transports and Antarctic Bottom Water properties and volumes. A Metrohm Pt-Titrode electrode was used for detecting the potentiometric end-point of the titration. The titration sequence and data acquisition were controlled by Metrohm Tiamo software. Samples directly collected from the Niskin bottles into 100 mL borosilicate glass bottles, using silicone tubing. Oxygen in the samples was fixed with Manganese Chloride and Alkaline Iodide solutions dispensed from calibrated pipettes. The fixing temperature was recorded on a hand-held thermometer. Immediately after fixing, the samples were shaken and made air-tight with water-filled collars before stored in the dark until analysis. Titrations for dissolved oxygen determination were made within the following 24 h. The concentration of thiosulphate was calibrated prior to starting oxygen analyses as well as blank determination.
