It has a downward looking antenna that performs cross track scans. Additional features include: simultaneous dual-frequency, matched beam operation at 13.4 and 35.6 GHz (same as GPM Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar), simultaneous measurement of both like- and cross-polarized signals at both frequencies, Doppler operation, and real-time pulse compression (calibrated reflectivity data can be produced for large areas in the field during flight, if necessary). The APR-2 flew on the NASA DC-8 for the Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) experiment and collected data between Aug 17, 2010 - Sep 22, 2010 and are in HDF-4 format. The major goal was to better understand how tropical storms form and develop into major hurricanes. NASA used the DC-8 aircraft, the WB-57 aircraft and the Global Hawk Unmanned Airborne System (UAS), configured with a suite of in situ and remote sensing instruments that were used to observe and characterize the lifecycle of hurricanes.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://search.earthdata.nasa.gov/search?q=gripapr2", "format": "BIN", "mediaType": "application/octet-stream"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://ghrc.earthdata.nasa.gov/browseui/#pub/gripapr2__1/browse/Z_vert_hor/APR2_AT_100817_1730Z--1800Z_v46_Y_0m_h_3000m_Ch_1_-1_-4_4.png", "format": "PNG", "mediaType": "image/png"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "http://ghrc.nsstc.nasa.gov/uso/ds_docs/grip/gripapr2/gripapr2_dataset.html", "format": "HTML", "mediaType": "text/html"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://ghrc.nsstc.nasa.gov/home/field-campaigns/GRIP", "format": "BIN", "mediaType": "application/octet-stream"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://ghrc.earthdata.nasa.gov/browseui/#pub/gripapr2__1/browse/", "format": "BIN", "mediaType": "application/octet-stream"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://ghrc.nsstc.nasa.gov/home/about-ghrc/citing-ghrc-daac-data", "format": "BIN", "mediaType": "application/octet-stream"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://ghrc.earthdata.nasa.gov/browseui/#pub/gripapr2__1/docs/APR2_GRIP_Format_4.6.pdf", "format": "PDF", "mediaType": "application/pdf"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "conformsTo": "http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gmi", "description": "The metadata's original source.", "downloadURL": "https://cmr.earthdata.nasa.gov/search/concepts/C1979833483-GHRC_DAAC.iso19115", "format": "ISO", "mediaType": "text/xml", "title": "Original Metadata"}], "identifier": "10.5067/GRIP/APR2/DATA201", "keyword": ["earth-science-precipitation-atmosphere-precipitation-rate", "earth-science-radar-spectral-engineering-doppler-velocity", "earth-science-radar-spectral-engineering-radar-backscatter", "earth-science-radar-spectral-engineering-radar-reflectivity"], "license": "https://www.usa.gov/government-works", "modified": "2026-04-06", "programCode": ["026:000"], "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "NASA/MSFC/GHRC"}, "spatial": "[\"CARTESIAN\",[{\"WestBoundingCoordinate\":-97.9192,\"NorthBoundingCoordinate\":34.847,\"EastBoundingCoordinate\":-56.0457,\"SouthBoundingCoordinate\":11.9008}]]", "temporal": "2010-08-17/2010-09-22", "theme": ["Earth Science"], "title": "GRIP AIRBORNE SECOND GENERATION PRECIPITATION RADAR (APR-2) V1"}
