Updated aeromagnetic compilation over Lake Superior

Metadata Updated: January 20, 2026

New aeromagnetic compilations have been produced for the Lake Superior region. The compilations combine previously published aeromagnetic survey data and compilations available from the Minnesota Geological Survey, Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, Ontario Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, Natural Resources Canada, and U.S. Geological Survey (see MagneticSurveys.pdf). Two compilations were produced which differ in their theoretical observation height. The compilation at 150 m height maintains anomaly shape over geologic features on land; whereas the compilation at 300 m height better maintains anomaly shape for sources observed over Lake Superior and would be preferred for modeling anomaly sources beneath the lake. The compilations were produced using industry standard techniques. The final compilations were analytically continued to a surface drape of 150 m and 300 m above ground and gridded to 250-m and 500-m cell size, respectively. The compilations provide consistent datasets appropriate for mapping onshore geology and magnetic modeling that extends across the lake shore.
