    A vehicle seat (30) is movable rearwardly with a pivoting action in response to forces applied to the seat in a rear impact. The seat is provided with an energy absorbing unit (1). A clamp (20, 21, 22, 23) is provided which can engage a deformable strip (8) that forms part of the energy absorbing unit (1) when a relatively high impact force is applied, indicative of a rear impact. The clamping action prevents any subsequent rearward movement of the vehicle seat (1).
