Height and Weight Limits for Trucks and Large Vehicles

Metadata Updated: March 8, 2026

Locations where the height and weight limits of the street facilities restrict trucks and large vehicles from safely traveling through or under them. Height limits include the posted (maximum safe) height for vehicles to travel under viaducts, overpasses, bridges, CTA “L” train tracks, overhead signage, and any other structure spanning the roadway. Height limits have a single address, whereas weight limits have a start and end location because they mostly apply to a segment of a roadway, not just a single point or address. In addition to facilities with height and weight limits, City boulevards where trucks are generally restricted are listed here with 5-ton weight limits. 1 ton = 2,000 lbs.

On many city streets, trucks and large vehicles require a permit to travel, based on the Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 9-72: Size and Weight Limits. Streets requiring permits for large vehicles to use that facility are not listed in this dataset. Please refer to the City of Chicago’s Online Permit Portal for information on roadway restrictions and permit requirements for large vehicles. Users can get permits to perform truck travel along industrial corridors, boulevards, Lake Shore Drive, and other restricted streets.

On the Chicago Traffic Tracker Web site, it is possible to get a truck route from any origin and destination in Chicago based on the truck’s height and weight features. The Chicago Traffic Tracker Web site or this dataset is not the source for determining if a truck requires a permit to operate on a city street. For this, refer to the online permit portal referenced above. The word “restriction” is used in the dataset to better describe the physical limitation of the street facility. It may also refer to the statutory restriction on operating a certain category of vehicle on that facility. However, not all the statutory restrictions are in this dataset.
