Grass Carp Response Program Database

Metadata Updated: April 14, 2026

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Grass Carp Response (GCR) Program is a component of the Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (FWCO), Green Bay FWCO, and Lower Great Lakes FWCO Aquatic Invasive Species Program(s). GCR staff work in collaboration with federal, state, and university partners to conduct Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) surveillance, response, and removal efforts in the Great Lakes basin (Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Ontario). This project will result in the removal of diploid and triploid Grass Carp, preventing Grass Carp from attaining densities capable of adversely affecting vegetated habitats, ecosystem functions, and associated fish communities. Grass Carp surveys have been conducted annually since 2018 (April-December). Sampling efforts have focused on identified spawning locations (i.e., Maumee and Sandusky rivers of Ohio) and tributaries with adequate thermal/ hydrological regimes that may be suitable for spawning. Standardized field protocols have been developed for each type of response effort utilized by field teams (i.e., Spawning, Sustained, and Targeted). Grass Carp are captured using boat electrofishing, gill nets, hoop nets, and trammel nets. Grass Carp are tagged/ released with acoustic transmitters or are harvested. Blood samples are collected from each Grass Carp and are sent to the FWS La Crosse Fish Health Center for ploidy analysis. All carcasses are sent to an assigned laboratory for fish processing, to support various research projects (e.g., age estimation, diet metabarcoding, otolith microchemistry/ stable isotope analysis). Sampling focus, protocols, and priority locations are determined by the Grass Carp Advisory Committee (GCAC), a sub-committee of the Lake Erie Committee (LEC), (https://www.glfc.org/grass-carp-advisory-committee.php) and contributes to the shared goals of the Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (ICRCC) (https://invasivecarp.us/PlansReports.html)
