eDNA Metabarcoding Datasets

Metadata Updated: April 14, 2026

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a molecular method of species detection that is used for aquatic invasive species (AIS) monitoring. In recent years, the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Great Lakes Early Detection Monitoring (EDM) program has incorporated multi-species eDNA (metabarcoding) monitoring into routine broad-spectrum surveillance efforts across regions. As the eDNA Metabarcoding Monitoring continues its implementation within the AIS EDM program, objectives will be refined to address specific research needs and establish routine monitoring efforts at identified high priority locations (HPLs). The basin-wide Great Lakes USFWS Early Detection Monitoring eDNA results for 2024 and 2025 are listed here in their respective zipped folders. Specifically, there are three associated datasets for each specific survey year. The Site Table provides information on environmental and geospatial aspects of an individual sampling location. The Sample Table, which is connected to the Site Table through the parentglobalid field, provides information on the equipment/material used and sample collection process. Lastly, the ID Table, which is connected to the Sample Table through the parentglobalid field, provides the resulting taxonomic identifications and associated values for a sampling event. For more details on the fields present in each table, see the Data Dictionary file.
